Greece defender George Baldock was found dead in the pool in his residence in Athens on Wednesday evening as reported by different media. The 31-year-old’s reason for death has not been identified yet as the police have started the investigations into the situation.
It’s reported that his wife called him before his death and after he didn’t pick up the phone for several hours, she got worried for the player as later she received the terrible news.
The player has recently signed a three-year contract with the Greece side Panathinaikos after leaving Sheffield United, where he spent seven years at the club.
Baldock started his professional career in MK Dons in the 10/11 season, until his big move to Sheffield United which happened in 2017 when the club was still in the Championship. Two years later, his team was promoted to the Premier League after finishing second in the table with 89 points, only five behind the first spot.
He made 83 Premier League appearances, scoring two goals and providing six assists as a right-back. Since his arrival to the English side, he was one of the main players in the team with more than 200 league matches played.
His good form opened the doors for a call from the national Greece team, featuring in 12 games for his country but was not called up for the next match in the Nations League against England which will be played on Thursday.
A statement from the Greece Super League came after the horrible news saying that the entire league was devastated by the news as they felt sorrow for the loss of the national team and Panathinaikos footballer. The league sends their condolences to the family and the people who have been around him.
His last game happened this Sunday against Olympiacos Piraeus in which the player was a starter for his team, playing 75 minutes before getting replaced by Giannis Kotsiras. The game ended goalless with a point for both teams.
